My Grandfather, Ernest Woodcock, a Baker from March, was conscripted into the Army in the First World War - he was with 19th Battalion, Manchester Regiment, as Private 51226,when he was killed, at the age of 27, on the first day of the Battle of Passchendaelle on 31st July 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
He left a wife, Ruth, and three daughters, Minnie, Ethel and my Mum, Olive.
I am researching his life and his army service - if you have any further info please let me know.
Many thanks
Roger Smith
