ELY Rowing Club's second Classic Regatta and a world record attempt called the Four-Pint Challenge 2007 takes place on Saturday on Ely's River Great Ouse.
The day starts at 11.30am with sailing demonstrations by junior and novice members of Ely Sailing Club, through until 4.30pm. The rowing timetable starts at 12.30pm, with races throughout the afternoon culminating in the presentation of trophies at 19.30pm.
Over the last few months an initiative to span the river with a bridge built from 14,100 empty plastic four-pint milk bottles has been gathering momentum. The culmination of the project will take place on Saturday when four milk bottle rafts, each with eight oarsmen and a drummer, will be raced by teams from SY Haulage, Huntingdon Sea Cadets, The Isle of Ely Rowing Club and Huntingdon Boat Club. The winner will receive a 'gold' four-pint milk trophy presented from Ely mayor Cllr Ron Bradney.
Once the race has finished, the sections will be joined to the secured bridgeheads on each bank and the mayor and mayoress will inspect the bridge. Organiser Jack Waterfall told the Ely Standard: "We believe that this stunt has never been attempted before. The Guinness Book of Records has shown no interest in the challenge, so in their absence, Cllr Bradney has agreed to verify if we have been successful in our attempt and then challenge anyone else in the universe to come forward and beat it."
Spectators can access the river bank via the easy access trail from The Maltings and Waterside. Refreshments will be available.
