WEB EDITORIAL - webdesk@herts24.co.uk
FROM July 1 virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in

England will become smoke-free.

Reporter Adam Lazzari went out in Ely to see what people think about the new law.

Maurice Prime, 72, from Cambridge

"I think it's a great idea. Maybe now there will be a lot more space in national health departments. Also, it's just not pleasant for non-smokers to get that horrible smell on them."

Steuart Northfield, 47, from Ely

"It's a good idea to ban smoking in restaurants because of the food and the atmosphere, but I don't think there should be a smoking ban in pubs.

"It wouldn't affect me personally because I've never smoked but I've worked with many disabled and elderly people and sometimes it can be not as easy for them to go outside every time they want a cigarette, especially for someone in a wheelchair.

"I go into the Prince Albert in Ely where it says on the door that smoking may take place throughout the pub. If you don't want to go in because of that, then just don't go, no one is forcing you."

Pauline Yardy, 52, from Ely

"I believe that pubs and restaurants should cater for both smokers and non-smokers, so I think the smoking ban is a bad idea. I'm a non-smoker but in sociable places we should all be able to choose what we do. I don't like people blowing smoke in my face, but it's a free country."

Barabara Birt, 75, from Ely

"The ban is a very good idea and long overdue. I've had four brothers and a father who smoked but I've never been tempted. Smoking is really bad for you and it makes your clothes smell awful. I hope it will make some people give up all together. I often tell people off when I see them buying cigarettes."

Louise, 24, from Soham

"The ban is a really good idea. I've never smoked and I find it really difficult to breath when people smoke around me. The smell is really bad as well. It's not too bad when you go to places with designated areas for smokers and non-smokers.

The ban will definitely help people to stop smoking because they won't just stop going out."

David Woods, 60, from Wimblingdon

"Of course it's a good thing. People won't mind going outside for a cigarette during the summer, but when it's freezing cold, it will become a real nuisance and people might be encouraged to cut down or give up altogether.

"I smoked for 40 years and gave up just nine months ago. Sometimes I don't even think about it, but there are times when I'm dying to have a smoke. It must be better for me not smoking any more, but I don't feel particularly healthier than I did.
